Hi Sports Herniac! Glad I found you. I have been suffering over the past year and a bit trying to get answers here in Vancouver, BC...slow going. Much like you, after my own research and pushing, I found a hernia specialist while waiting for a follow up with an orthopedic guy (6 months). It turns out I have an inguinal hernia. Still waiting to see what the "special x-rays" show - FAI or not. MRI showed nothing in the hip (labrum seems intact). but that clicking and restricted motion tells me something's going on in there, as did the fluid I had in the joint... I'm wondering which came first; the hip or the hernia. For the record: Dr. Peter Blair is the guy I found. http://www.herniarepair.ca/
The hip guy is Dr. Michael Gilbart @ UBC Thanks for the links! And here's to a better New Year! Cheers!

I had sports hernia surgery from Dr. Meyers in 2007 after suffering from groin for three years. I was able to play two years of college soccer with occassional but manageable pain, but since the summer of 2009 my groin had been giving me major trouble again. No amount of rest seems to help it. I've read up on hip fai/labral tears and the description matches perfectly with a lot of symptoms I've been having for years (popping of the hip, lower back pain, groin pain, hip stiffness, etc.). Could you please reccomend the absolute best doctors around for hip fai surgery. I go to school near New York, so that is a consideration, but I would be willing to travel anywhere within the United States if it is worth it. I appreciate the help.

some people consider these 3 to be the top docs for fai in the usa:

1) dr march philipon in vail, co
2) dr bryan t kelly, hss nyc
3) dr byrd in nashville, tn

i am having my first fai sugery done on march 22nd in nyc with dr kelly
best of luck!

Hi, I'm very curious to know more about your recovery and what procedure you had done?

I have a GREAT FAI Hip doctor in CA. I'm a surfer and he fixed Kelly Slater's hip FAI / Labrum problems, the GREATEST surfer to ever live... he's 38 years old and has 9 World Titles... imagine Michael Jordan only has 6 world titles... that puts things in perspective. Look up Kelly Slater on the internet if you don't know who he is.

Anyway... I have had an issue now for a couple of years and I have been to several doctors and had several different diagnosis from Hip Labrum Tear, FAI, but now as time went on it's become more conclusive that its a Sports Hernia. My hip doctor as mentioned above intially thought it was FAI / Labrum tear but NO LONGER thinks thats what it is. I did MRI's & X-rays and there was NO tears and the FAI was very very slight... and therefore referred me to see a Sports Hernia doctor. Also my physical therapist didn't think it was FAI or hip related but definately thinks it's a Sports Hernia.

I'm in CA... and I have a PPO healthcare plan and ironically enough the doctors I want to go to in CA are NOT part of my PPO network and it makes it really expensive but Dr. William Meyers in Philly is part of my PPO network so I might go there.

What did you think of HIM?

I have family in Philly and it might be cheaper to go to him and he's supposed to be one of the really good ones.

Please let me know how your recovery went? Thank you for time, it's been a long and frustrating road to recovery as you know. As a very athletic guy it's been driving me crazy.

Thanks so much... it's always nice when people who've been through it reach back and help others too,

I have had pain in my right groin for almost two years. I had a hip arthrogram which showed a slightly frayed labrum, but between my orthopedist and surgeon it was determined I had a sports hernia. I had sports hernia surgery in January 09 and the pain in my groin and hip is just awful. The ortho has diagnosed me with rectus abdominus tendinosis, and has tried plasma rich protein therapy on the the tendon. It's been 10 weeks since then and no relief. I have been in physical therapy for three solid months and no improvement. My ortho thinks my hip may still be the source of my pain and has tentatively suggested I see Dr. Meyers. I live in Atlanta, so I would have to make the journey. Any other suggestions?

Sports Herniac said...

dr meyers is THE MAN in the usa for sports hernias. he also works tightly with some hip fai specialists.

post op for sports hernias i still was in pain. eventually, when i stopped stretching so much, things started to calm down.
if you have a rectus tendonosis, then i would think twice about lunge (psoas) and sphinx or cobra poses (stretch the rectus). it would need time to calm down. chances are the rectus is in spasm, kind of hypertonic, and that only increases the strain on that tendon when you are stretching it.
have you tried neural therapy injections for the trigger points? or medical acupuncture for the trigger points?
i wish i could help more, but i am not a doc.
it is often, though, that the hip problem is the cause of the sports hernia, and it should be looked at by an fai specialist.
best of luck!
btw, i will take time to calm down the nerve pains. 2 weeks post op is not much time.

Sports Herniac said...

in my experience, the sports hernia surgeries with dr muschaweck was worth the money. in 2006, total cost for all pre and post op stuff (there was a lot with me), and surgeries plus 2 nights' stay in the clinic's hotel was just over 10 grand.

Cordell said...

Hey SH,

So did you have Dr. Muschaweck or Dr. Meyers do your sports hernia surgery?

When did you have it done?
Are you 100% back to be active yet?

I think I'm gonna try and see Dr. Meyers since my insurance covers him... it would be out of my budget to fly to Germany but Dr. Meyers has worked on alot of top athletes too so I think I'll be in good hands with him.

Thanks,

Sports Herniac said...

i went to muschaweck. my insurance wouldn't cover meyers, and the battle with appeals (etc) would have taken well over a year. i went 18 months in very bad pain so i went to dr muschaweck because not only is she the best, but i could get it done quickly. all said and done, even if insurance did agree to cover some, it would have cost me more to see meyers.

i am not active yet, meaning not my sports anymore, but i also ran into other setbacks with lyme disease during my healing.
but i was swimming a mile to a mile and a half 3x week, and some yoga, with no sports hernia issues, just hips.
and, to top it off, i am one of those people with hip fai, the cause of my sports hernias. surgery for them start march 22nd.

tennisgurl said...

Thanks for the suggestions. It's been over a year, not 2 weeks since my SH surgery, so that's why I am pursuing possibly other avenues of treatment. I think you are correct on the stretching...I've been alot more conservative on that tendon...found out if I work it too hard it bites me back. Good luck with your surgery.

Cordell said...

Yeah, that's interesting the relation between Sports Hernia & FAI. I've been dealing with this injury for 3 years now and getting mixed opinions. And about a year ago I went to a really good FAI doctor and he took MRI's & X-rays. His conclusion was possible FAI due to a very slight hip growth but MRI showed no tears to Labrum.

We waited until after I did Physical Therapy. My PT said the pain from PT was from a Sports Hernia NOT a hip issue.

So my FAI doctor reviewed everything again and said, now he thinks it's a Sports Hernia. I just hope if I have the Sports Hernia surgery that corrects it and they don't later say oh you have FAI too.

So I'm trying to go see Dr. Meyers. From what it sounds like I'm in good hands? I only saw one complaint so far about Dr. Meyers and many, many positive testimonials. Does Dr. Meyers have a website, I can't find one?

Anonymous said...

I've seen Dr Meyers for bilateral groin problems related to FAI. I received great care and he and Dr Bryan Kelly worked together on my case (it was complicated). I believe this is an advantage over Dr Muscheweck. In addition, if there is a need for follow-up (which can happen), it is A LOT easier to get to Philly than Germany or to track Muschaweck down in the US. Dr Kelly is VERY thorough and his knowledge goes WAY beyond arthroscopic procedures. This is important because he is able to diagnose problems beyond FAI and sports hernia that may be causing your hip pain.

As far as cost, I can tell you that I was able to get pre-determinations (Aetna and UHC) agreeing to pay for the surgery (doesn't always happen). If the insurance company wouldn't have provided the pre-determination that they deemed the surgery medically necessary, I would have had to pay a flat fee up front and then get paid back later if it was turned over on appeal. Do NOT be afraid of the appeal process as I have gone through the process several times and I've won every time. They count on people quitting...they are playing the odds with you as the statistics show more people quit w/each denial. Have the MD office help by having them writing a letter and submitting articles re: why YOUR surgery is medically necessary (this step is crucial). Also, as per the insurance companies, a "fair" review is to be done by a specialist. This often doesn't happen until the 3rd and final appeal. Make sure you find out or pay attention to the credentialing of the MD who denies your claim the 1st and 2nd time and use that in your future appeals. It sounds like a lot of work but it isn't that bad! The process shouldn't take a year as there is usually a 30-60 day period they have to review your appeal (check your policy), so in worse case, 3 appeals would take 6 months. Don't be afraid to call to hold them to the agreement.

tennisgurl said...

I had the sports hernia surgery a year ago, and UHC denied the claim. My surgeon reduced his fee, which I was stuck paying. However, I am going to try and appeal the UHC decision. Do you have any specific suggestions that would help me make my case with UHC? From what I am reading from your comments, they have paid for this surgery in the past.

Sports Herniac said...

anonymous, did you have both sports hernia surgeries and fai surgeries?
bilateral?
did you return to all of your activities?

Anonymous said...

Tennisgurl,

You can email me at pittmsw@gmail and I can give you details on the appeals process. Yes, UHC agreed to pay.

Sportsherniac,
Yes, FAI & athletic pubalgia both hips. In addition, ended up w/additional impingement, so still working on recovery.

Sports Herniac said...

additional impingement?
did the growth come back after surgery?
who did your fai surgery?

Anonymous said...

Sport Herniac,

I actually had an unusual posterior impingement in addition to my CAM impingement (one side only), so no, it wasn't a situation where the bone grew back. Dr Kelly did the surgeries.

Sports Herniac said...

hmmm. kelly is doing my first hip in 6 weeks. in 05 i was told i have a posterior labral tear but the recent mris didn't show it. i have posterior symptoms.

did kelly not fix it because it was via arthroscopy and not open?

Hi,
I have had both hips debrided for FAI. I had a "failed" surgery at University of Michigan hospital. (Do not go there!) After months of research and patient testimonials I had the hips done by Dr. Ira Zaltz at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. Dr. Z is a very accomplished arthroscopist but he now recommends the open procedure for femoral neck resurfacing. I had an arthroscopic attempt at U-M too and they just can't get to the bone with a scope. Dr. Kelly actually went to have Dr. Z show him his open procedure. I can't recommend Dr. Zaltz enough if you are in the midwest.
Sports Herniac: how did your surgery go? Did you have an open procedure?

I hyper extended my hip in a rugby match two months ago. I also ripped through three tacklers in such a way that overstrained my lower abdominal area. I felt some tearing in my obliques. I played through the pain, and tried to train the next week. While training the next week, i could not lift my legs while doing crunchies and leg lifts. It felt like my tranverse abdominus just gave out. I took a four weeks off, and did some (weak) physio - the electric stimulus stuff and some cream rubbed into my groin area. Now everything seems to be getting worse. As they were doing the physio, my back went out (lumbar region). I had had a hernia surgery on my right side 15 years ago, and that side was starting to hurt too. Tendons or muscles are giving me sharp pains all around my pelvic bone (felt like my hamstring, adductors and pubic bone area). My urinary tract feels strange now - like i am going to pee just a bit and tingling. I have nerve pain shooting down my back and even my mid back area feels general weakness. I started doing some straight leg drops with the other leg bent, and i hear clicking in my hips, especially my right side. The doctor i went to has had me do x-rays, i talked him into getting me an appointment for an MRI and ultrasound (after reading this blog), and i am doing stretching for the groin, hamstrings and adductors. How should i be prepared to press the doctor to take action after i get these tests done? What type of doctor is best? I am going to an ortheopedic doctor. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am living on Madeira Island, Portugal but am from San Francisco. How much does a sports hernia surgery cost in the States? What is the best option in Europe? I have social medicine benefits here, should i trust a social medicine doctor for surgery?

is anyone out here? i have been having very similar issues. 9wks ago was doing strength and conditining work on bosu ball and suspension ropes. it was tough workout. awoke the next day with terrible abdominal pain, mostly lower right. then the following day, right side of scrotum was swollen. was swnt to ed, told it was orchitis. followed up with urologist. 14days of levaquin and steroid dose pack for 7days. swelling decreased, but right testicle, right abdominal, and very tight upper thigh. was then placed on 14more days of levaquin. thigh tightness eventually subsided, but right testicle is still tender/aches to touch or certain movement. urologist ordered ct to rule out other causes..possible fai to right hip noted on ct. followed up with 2nd orthopod, confirmed fai, cam lesions bilaterally. he palpated pubic symphisis, point tenderness noted. he suspects sports hernia, refferred me to dr catttey....any new info would be great,,,thnks

Hi Sports Herniac. I have been struggling with extreme burning in the groin area and self diagnosed it initially as a sports hernia. I know at what point I injured myself but experienced the pain prior to the telltale bulge of a hernia about a week later above the groin. I bought an expensive hernia belt that would sit low enough to hold in the hernia and much to my surprise, the pain in the groin stopped. I could walk again for over two miles with no pain. I have concluded that what I thought was a sports hernia was in fact referred pain from the hernia above the groin. I believe it is a nerve being compressed by the hernia. I will be having surgery on hernia and expect relief from the lower groin pain as a result. I hope this helps at least some folks out there.

What a great site, there are others! My problems began 23 years ago...round ligaments problems, large kids and no diagnosis. My daughter was over 10 1/2 lbs. and she basically delivered herself...I heard the cracking/snapping/popping througout my left side groin. Went to walk after she was born...could not weight bear on left side and groin/leg numbness, felt this wave like sensation across my groin hip area. Fast forward 6 years, finally saw a sports med guy. I didn't play sports...nobody knew what to do with me (thought I just wanted pain killers). Sports med said that I would need to be treated like a football player, with an extreme groin injury, or be in a wheelchair in 10 years. Went through a year of treatments...SI joint block injections, 9 session of deep prolo. Four months later, felt stronger...didn't need a cart to walk across the mall.

Got through nine years, then I fell and twisted while moving quickly up the stairs. Hard impact on my knee, twisting groin, same injuy side. Slowly felt pain/weakness coming back. Two months later...couldn't move. My whole groin/hip/low back/Si joint, everything was "stuck" and the pain. No left side weight bearing. I didn't know where the pain was coming from. Went back to my SI joint specialist who did original prolo. For three years and a few hundred appts., with doctors, physios, anyone...

Then, my son injures himself playing hockey. Eight months later, torn labrun diagnosis for him, took the right physio to pick it up. Went to Sport Med. guy with him and was answering "yes" to all questions. I had the same thing. Had MRIs, but without the contrast...need the contrast. Sure enough, full thickness tear shows up and a year later we both have surgery. He recovered quickly...in good shape. However, mine was horrible and I'm still not better. Six years after that fall up the stairs, I still struggle. I now know that I have what is described as a "sports hernia". I have every symptom, plus some. Sad that doctors don't think outside the box. I still would not have been diagnosed with the labral tear if not for my son having that injury.

This is a slow and painful process. Can't work, can't use stairs without crutches...no functional life. Off doctor to report this new finding...it will be investigated and is hopefully my missing piece of the puzzle.

Hello,

I've started a Facebook page for folks dealing with Sports Hernias.

I started the Facebook page because it's such a common way to communicate these days.

Hi Herniac,

I can't seem to find any of your posts since your scheduled surgery w/Dr. Kelly.

If you've given up your blog receive this nonetheless then i wish you the best and hope you beat this thing.

If however you still check in or respond individually, i'm very curious how things went. I know it would be very helpful for me.

I just had MRI's for Dr. Kelly at HSS. He rejected me as a candidate for surgery (by him), which i believe means that he has ruled out FAI, but another HSS Doc did confirm the diagnosis of Sports Hernia .

I can fill in details if you write me back.

Again, best wishes regardless,

Michael
